BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Veterans football team is getting ready to play its first non-Valley opponent of the season.

The Chargers will take on New Braunfels Canyon in the area round of the 6A Division II playoffs.

Canyon finished second in its district, only behind Cibolo Steele.

“We know they have an explosive offense and a stout defense,” said Brownsville Veterans head coach J.C. Ramirez. “At same time we like our matchup. Saw their game film already of who they played in first round. Another flexbone team. They got the win but there’s some opportunities for us to exploit. So we like the matchup.”

The Chargers reached the state semifinals last year in 5A Division I. They’re hoping their experience in high-pressure postseason games will give them an edge against the Cougars.

“They’ve a lot of explosiveness and speed,” said Brownsville Veterans senior safety Michael Rodriguez. “We got speed too. They’ve got size but you see that every in playoffs. We’ve been there before. So, we’re excited.”

Friday’s game between the Chargers and Cougars will be played at Heroes Stadium in San Antonio. Kick-off is at 7:00 p.m.
